With the introduction of Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 series and the new Wear OS version from Google, Spotify has introduced a significant update to its Wear OS app, the company said. Much like a feature added to the Apple Watch app last May, the updated Wear OS app from Spotify lets you stream and download music straight to your watch so you can listen to it without a smartphone or even connection.
“In the coming weeks, Spotify users will be able to play their favorite playlists, albums and podcasts with their smartwatches running Wear OS,” the company writes on its blog. “Having Spotify on your wrist gives you more freedom to run, dance, shop, cook, socialize – and control your music and podcasts at the same time. We’re also excited to introduce one of the most requested features by our users: the ability to download all of your favorite music and podcasts to your smartwatch. “
Spotify noted that the update will arrive on smartwatches from Fossil, Mobvoi and Suunto, as well as the latest Samsung devices. It should work on older watches as well, as Spotify states that “your smartwatch must be running at least Wear OS 2.0 or higher”.
Once you’ve installed the latest app on your Wear OS watch, you’ll need to pair the headphones directly with your watch. From there, you can stream music, playlists, and podcasts directly without the need of a phone. You can also choose content to download directly to your watch. Once that’s done, a green arrow will appear next to the items. Spotify said the new version would be rolled out “in the coming weeks”.
