Amazon expands service that delivers groceries inside your garage

The news: Amazon is expanding its key in-garage grocery delivery service to more than 5,000 US cities. It started in five cities in November.

How it works: With this service, Amazon Prime members can have groceries from Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods delivered to their garage. Customers must have a $ 30 smart garage door opener or compatible device connected to myQ and create a link to it when checking out online. You must also use the Key by Amazon app. Drivers get temporary, one-time access via their Amazon handheld scanner, which is also used to close the garage after delivery is complete.

Creepy or Comfortable? If you give a delivery person access to the inside of your home, some people may feel uncomfortable. According to Amazon, drivers will be screened with extensive background checks and instructed not to go more than a meter into your garage.

Experiment takes shape: The company began testing Amazon Key for regular shipments in 2017 and later expanded that service, now referred to by Amazon as Key. The grocery store expansion is happening as the online grocery store has accelerated due to the pandemic.
